ALCOHOLISM STUDY
Task for new committee
A committee has been set up to give additional help to alcoholics in Christchurch and is , preparing a report on how best this may be done. The committee was formed after Dr T. W. Harrison, superintendent of the Queen Mary Hospital, Hanmer Springs, had written to church social service organisations in Christchurch asking for their help in giving aftercare to alcoholics treated at Hanmer Springs. They often relapsed into drinking because there was no-one to help them through the difficult readjustment to normal life, he said. The church agencies formed a committee comprising Dr Harrison and representatives of the churches and of the National Society on Alcoholism. The committee decided that action was urgent and began to prepare a report. The committee also approached the Minister of Health (Mr McKay), who said the Health Department would study the report to consider what help the department might give.
