NEW RAIL WAGGONS
1710 to be ordered (N.Z. Press Association! WELLINGTON, Feb. 25. Government has approved the acquisition of 1710 new railway goods waggons as part of the six-year development programme for the New Zealand Railways. I The Minister of Railways I (Mr Gordon) announced this today and said in his statement that as many waggons as possible would be constructed in local railway workshops but, because all were required by early 1973, others would be imported for final assembly in New Zealand.
Present plans provided for 610 flat-top bogie waggems—suitable for carrying containers, timber, logs, steel products, and similar consignments—to be built in railway workshops, Mr Gordon said. World-wide tenders would be invited for the supply of 600 four-wheeled and 500 bogie waggons of types suitable for paper and “flat-top” traffic. Mr Gordon said the $14.3m loan from the International Bank for reconstruction and development, announced yesterday, would cover the overseas content of the cost of the new waggons, and also signalling equipment and workshops and track machinery that would have to be obtained from overseas sources within the next two years.
