Fisherman dies

The body of a fisherman was recovered from the Rakaia River near Te Pirita at 1.15 p.m. yesterday and his companion, with whom he had gone fishing the previous evening, was rescued from a large island in the river on which he was trapped. The dead man was Ivan Ewart Cooper, aged 54, of 115 Gtandovey Road, Christchurch. The rescued fisherman is Albert Edward Askin, aged 62, of Auckland. The men failed to return home from a fishing trip on Wednesday evening and the police were notified. The Rakaia search and rescue organisation was called upon to assist, and two jet boats belonging to a member were used in the search in the Te Pirita area. A harvard from Wigram also searched. Mr Cooper’s body was found at 1.15 p.m. and Mr Askin was found # trapped on the island soon afterwards.
