SALOON RACES

Decision on events There will be four races in the Mercury saloon-car series next racing season, but “all-comer” cars will not be eligible to take part, a meeting of South Island motorracing promoters has decided. The races will be at Wigram, Teretonga, Timaru and Ruapuna, and a slightly different points system will be used although places in the later races in the series will, as in the past, be worth more points than places in the early races. A win will be worth five points at Wigram, 10 at Teretonga, 15 at Timaru, and 20 points at Ruapuna. The basic regulations will be unchanged: cars must retain their original body profile, and the engine must be mounted within the confines of the original engine compartment It was also resolved to ask the Motorsport Association to change the upper enginecapacity limit for saloon-car championships from the present 5.5-litres to 6.5 litres or 7 litres.
