First sight of Webb
Although he has been left out of the first test team, the Otago fast bowler, M. G. Webb, will still make his first appearance in Christchurch on Sunday. Webb yesterday accepted an invitation from the East- ' Shirley club to play in the Shirley Lodge singlewicket tournament at Burwood OvaL Last year he was in a similar position chosen as twelfth man for the match against the Australians and also accepted an invitation on that occasion to play in the single-wicket touma-
ment However, heavy rain caused the tournament to be abandoned. Although he has been playing first-class cricket for two seasons, Webb has not played in Christchurch. An injury meant he missed Otago’s Plunket Shield match against Canterbury last season, and the comparable game this season was in Dunedin. There will obviously be a great deal of interest taken in Webb’s bowling. He is almost certainly the fastest to appear in firstclass cricket in this country since G. A. Bartlett.
