Rush of custom

Two persons were ordered to be remanded in custody and there were no cells in which to hold them —this was the situation which faced the Rangiora police yesterday morning.

Mr W. F. Brown, S.M., ordered two persons appearing in the Rangiora Magistrate’s Court yesterday to be remanded in custody, to be called for sentence later in the day. But there are no cells at the Rangiora Police Station now; the old cell block was disposed of about three years ago because of its lack of use and poor condition.

The two youths remanded had to sit in the police station under the watchful eye of a constable until recalled to the Court later in the day for sentence.

Any person being held overnight normally is taken to Christchurch.
