Covered pool
It is unlikely that Christchurch will be relieved of the responsibility of providing a covered pool for the 1974 Games.
This is the upshot of an inquiry made of the Commonwealth Games Federation.
At the request of the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey)_the chairman
of the 1974 Commonwealth Games organising committee (Mr R. S. Scott) early this morning spoke by telephone to the secretary of the Commonwealth Games Federation (Mr K. S. Duncan) in London. Mr Scott asked Mr Duncan whether or not it was mandatory for a Commonwealth Games swimming pool to be covered. Mr Duncan said he could not give a complete answer “off the cuff,” but he said he did not think it would be wise for Christchurch to depart from the details it had in its application made to the Games Federation last July—and which allowed for a covered swimming pool.
He also said that he thought that the nature of Christchurch’s weather would make a covered pool most desirable. Mr Duncan said he would telex his full answer to New Zealand within 12 hours.
