Liberated fairy tales
Sir,—How pleasing to note that Snow White, as liberated by the Merseyside women, now works beside the seven dwarfs in the mines, instead of lolling about at home being a sex symbol! I trust she gets equal pay and dirt money. But what is to be done about all those really nasty females of legend and fairy tale—the witches and enchantresses and wicked godmothers, not to mention the sirens and Gorgons? It doesn’t seem fair that they should have such a bad press.
Someone should protest. Discrimination against the female sex, however, is sometimes matched by discrimination against the male. Men should be liberated from that old nursery rhyme: "What are little boys made of? Slugs and snails and puppy-dogs’ tails. That’s what little boys are made of. What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice and all that’s nice, And that’s what little girls are made of.”—Yours, etc., HELEN GARRETT. February 23, 1971.
