(Staff reporter accompanying the Minister)
GREYMOUTH, Feb. 23.
The town of-Reefton had suffered setbacks which had depressed the economy to a degree where urgent action was needed, the chairman of the Inangahua Countv Council (Mr J. E. Etheredge) told the Minister of Mines (Mr Shelton) at Reefton today. The forestry training school had gone to Rotorua, removing $40,000 a year revenue for the town. A sawmill had been lost by fire and not reopened. Ten men had been lost by the railway conversion to diesel and the local railways coal market had been lost in addition to a scaling down in the demand for coal. Seven men had been lost when the Reefton dairy factory closed. “The opening of Otira Gorge to buses cut through tourist traffic via Reefton in half, said Mr Etheredge.
