Australians to drive at Methven today

Several Australian reinsmen visiting Christchurch for the Inter-Dominion Championship series are expected to drive at the Methven Trotting Club’s autumn meeting today. Three visitors have engagements, and it is thought likely that several others will be seen in action. _ . . a • * a._ j Vfinfl Defnrnnfo (11 If

For several, it will be their first experience of race driving on a grass track, and with fields about 20 strong they will probably be competing against more horses than ever before. K. Newman, who is in Christchurch with the 1970 New South Wales “horse of the year,” Koala Frost, will drive Arapoi in the second division of the Highbank Handicap. A five-year-old by Raceabout from Isadoras, Arapoi is owned and trained by C. L. Rhodes. It is also possible that Newman will drive one or more of the horses prepared by C. McDonald. “I haven’t actually engaged him,” said McDonald, “but if he wants to he can drive one or all of them.”

E. Sims has been engaged to drive Flight Honours in the same race as Arapoi. Sims has been associated with the purchase of several horses for the New York trainer, S. Dancer. B. Clarke, who will drive Welcome Advice in the In-ter-Dominion Grand Final on Saturday, will handle the speedy but rather erratic trotter, Jason McCord, in the Lauriston Handicap, over two miles. Jason McCord will give away starts of up to 60 yards to most of his rivals. He has had several placings this season, but in his two most recent starts he failed to trot solidly. Nimble Stratus, in the Lyndhurst Handicap, the first

leg of today’s on-course concession double, will be one of the best prospects. He has not raced since he failed by a nose to hold off Alcadia at Rangiora in December. He has drawn favourably and if he has made the improvement expected in the last, few weeks, he should be too : speedy for most of his rivals. , Echo Valley and the Dou-schka-Good Admiral bracket i could be the pick of the rest. Bomber Bill, runner-up to , Scottish Count at Washdyke on January 16, at his most recent start, should go , close to winning the second leg, the First Spaxton Handicap, a race in which Irten Prince and Samaion may be the hardest for him to beat. Fair weather is forecast and the track will be fast. Fields are.— First leg of on-course double 11.20 a.m.— LYNDHURST HANDICAP *700; 2:20 class; trotters; 13f.
