J. C. Snead, nephew of the celebrated Sam Snead, won his first United States P.G.A. tournament yesterday, when he shot a final round of 66 (six under par) for a 72-hole total of 273 in the $llO,OOO Tucson open, United Press International reported.
In the rain-delayed tournamen , the players had to play two 18-hole rounds on the final day, and Snead and D. Douglass were tied at 137 going into the third round.
Each shot a 70 and they went on to the final 18 holes still level. Snead, aged 29, whose previous best finish was a second place in the 1969 Michigan classic, did the front nine in 31, Douglass 32. On the back nine Snead had a birdie two on the twelfth after Douglass had birdied the eleventh, but Douglass again drew level with a birdie three at 14. Snead, however, broke well away with an eagle three on the 580-yard fifteenth, and al-
though he dropped strokes at both of the last two holes, his 66 left him one ahead of Douglass. Snead’s rounds were 66, 71, 70, 66, and Douglass scored 69, 68, 70, 67. G. Archer was third on 277 (68, 73. 68, 68). The New Zealander, R. J. Charles, finished eight strokes behind Snead with rounds of 73, 70, 70, 68, and J. M. Lister totalled 293 (72, 79, 73, 69).
