Riccarton street to be borough model
A Ricearton street will have its paths, roadway, kerbs, and channelling improved and underground wiring put in at no cost to property-owners to make it a model borough street, the Ricearton Borough Council decided last evening.
The chairman of the electricity committee (Cr R. S. Lester) said that George Street, running between Wainui Street and Matipo Street, lent itself to such a project and was high on the list of
priorities for repair work to be done. The Mayor (Mr R. W. J. Harrington) said that the council had had the scheme in mind for some time. George Street would show people what it was hoped the rest of the borough would look like in 15 or 20 years time.
Mr Harrington said the people of the borough would be able to judge for themselves the plans for the future. He was quite confident about the future of the borough, and was not concerned about a takeover. Remuneration.—The council agreed to a recommendation that the Mayor’s honorarium be raised from the present $BOO a year to $1875, as from November 27, 1970. The amount for councillors was set at $5 a meeting, with a maximum of $260 in one year.
Street reopening.—A townplanning committee recommendation that road access from Lowe • Street to Blenheim Road be reopened, was adopted. Mr Harrington said that access had been closed for a trial period of two months, but a report received gave no good reason why the access should remain closed.
Commonwealth Games.—A finance and by-law committee recomendation that the first of the five annual payments of $BOO be made to the 1974 Commonwealth Games organising committee was approved.
