‘Colossal expense’
The 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh were a colossal expense to ratepayers, an administrative officer at the University of Edinburgh said in Christchurch yesterday. Mr A. C. Acaster, appointments secretary to the university, Is In New Zealand as part of a tour of the United States and Commonwealth countries to study the provision of services for university students.
Commenting on last year’s Games, he said that be did not approve of the type of show business that surrounded sueh epeetacles.
“But it was extremely wen organised and we have been left with a large number of magnificent, though very expensive sports facilities,” he said.
