Police clamp on bottle attacks

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Feb 19.

The Auckland police intended to clamp down severely on persons using broken bottles as weapons, said Acting Chief Inspector M. D. Cummings today.

“It’s only a matter of time before someone’s killed,” he said. “We are taking a very serious view of anyone who uses broken bottles.” In Auckland last night three young men were attacked by a group of seven people in the city.

One of those assaulted, Reginald Manukau, aged 20, of Ponsonby, was stabbed in the back with a broken bottle and required extensive stitching in hospital, including the sewing up of a muscle. Mr Cummings said there had been a disturbing number of incidents recently where gangs of people had picked on others.

“Not only do they have the advantage of weight and numbers, but on a eouple of occasions they have broken bottles to use as weapons.

“A bottle itself Is dangerous enough, but a broken bottle is even more dangerous than a knife.”
