OUTPOST HIT
Khe Sanh area (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SAIGON, Feb. 18. North Vietnamese troops surrounded and attacked an American infantry position in the rocky hills north-east of Khe Sanh last night but heavy United States artillery fire and air strikes drove them back, military spokesmen said today.
The outpost was reported quiet except for sporadic firing. The North Vietnamese also intensified < their attacks against South Vietnamese troops in Laos. Fire swept through a section of an ammunition dump early today at the Quang Tri combat base 19 miles south of the Demilitarised Zone. One officer estimated 500 to 700 tons of ammunition was destroyed, but no casualties were reported. Asked if the loss of the square-mile storage point would affect United States operations in support of the South Vietnamese-Laotian campaign, an officer said: “That’s classified.” The Quang Tri base is rear headquarters for United States operations in the north. Attempts were made today to fly reinforcements to the American position near Khe Sanh despite bad weather. Initial reports put American casualties at eight wounded.
