Nelson man to be soccer life member
A Nelson man who has given more than 25 years service to the administration of soccer will -be made a life member of the New Zealand Football Association this week-end. He is Mr S. J. Guppy, a former president and senior vice-president of the national association, and at present president of both the national junior and Nelson associations. A tremendous amount of the work Mr Guppy has done for soccer has been at his own expense. He represented New Zealand at the international congresses in 1948 (London), 1962 (Santiago, Chile), 1964 (Tokyo) and London (1966), and accompanied national teams on tours to New Caledonia
(1958) and Tahiti (I 960 and on all of these occasions paid his own costs. He served on the N.Z.F.A. council from 1959 to 1968, was a South Island selector for six years from 1957, has managed several South Island teams, and has represented the South Island Minor Associations on the national junior F.A. for 14 years.’ However, Mr Guppy’s soccer interest has not been confined to administration: he played football for 45 years. Nor has soccer been his sole sporting interest; he has also been a prominent cricket and boxing official throughout the same period.
