Shortage of waggons
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, Feb. 17. A major shortage of railway waggons is holding up the transport of 2,000,000 feet of timber from South Westland. The manager of Henderson and Pollard’s sawmill at Harihari (Mr M. Curtis) said yesterday that at least 25 UB fiat timber waggons would be needed to clear the backlog of timber held at the Ross railhead.
In addition, his firm had stopped sending timber to the railhead and was stockpiling large quantities of it at the mill and was protecting it from the weather.
Mr Curtis said that other mills were having the same problems. Clients were becoming desperate for deliveries. The transport officer with the Railways Department (Mr E. L. Paynter) said that the shortage of UB bogies was caused by the seasonal fluctuation demand on them throughout New Zealand.
