Arms sales supported
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BLANTYRE (Malawi), February 14.
The President of Malawi <Dr Hastings Banda), said on his return to Malawi from a visit to London that he was convinced that the British Government should immediately allow the resumption of arms sales to South Africa.
The British Prime Minister (Mr Heath) should “not waste a minute” in resuming arms sales, since nothing would come out of the investigation into the issue established at the Singapore Commonwealth conference. “It would go right ahead,” Dr Banda told reporters at the airport in Blantyre. In Singapore he was the only African leader to support Mr Heath’s arguments for resumed arms sales, the President said. African leaders who shouted about South Africa did so in ignorance, getting their opinions from the “professional refugees” in Lusaka and Dar-es-Salaam. A number of African leaders now agreed with his views on dialogue and contact with South Africa but were afraid to say so openly, Dr Banda added.
