FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A ridge of high pressure extends from the east on to the North Island; the weak cold front over the South Island is moving slowly north-eastwards; another ridge of high pressure extends from south-east Australia towards the south of the South Island.

Forecast: Canterbury.—Cloudy, with a few patches of light rain; rather mild, with moderate variable winds, easterlies predominating. Marlborough. Southerly or easterly winds prevailing this morning, fresh near Cook Strait, but moderate elsewhere; rather mild, with little or no rain, but cloudy skies. Nelson.—Cloudy and mild, with scattered patches of light rain; moderate, variable winds. Buller and Westland.—Some rain in Westland, more especially in the south, but only a few showers in Buller; mild, with moderate, variable winds. Outlook: fair, apart from a few scattered ! showers.
