Leeds upset in cup tie

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON.

Colchester United, the fourth division giantkiller, on Saturday provided one of the greatest shocks in the 100-year history of the English Football Association Cup when it beat the favourite, Leeds United, 3-2, in the fifth round.

Leeds, top of the first division and 74 places above its lowly opponent—was flattered by the final scoreline, two late goals enabling the Yorkshire team to cover up its earlier drubbing. The former England centreforward, R. Crawford, shocked Leeds with two goals in a six-minute spell in the first half, and the Arsenal reject, D. Simmons, put the 500-1 outsider three up in the fifty-third minute. The capacity crowd of 16,000 at Colchester’s picturesque ground had their enthusiasm blunted as N. Hunter and J. Giles netted goals for' Leeds, but at the end hundreds of them

swarmed on to the pitch to celebrate with their heroes a great victory. Colchester’s remarkable feat overshadowed the six other fifth-round matches played, but its Fourth Division colleague, Brentford, came within 10 minutes of scoring a similar upset over the Second Division leader, Hull City. A tenth minute goal by R. Ross looked to be Brentford’s passport into the sixth round, particularly when the Hull goal-keeper, I. McKechnie, was carried off at half-time. But Hull’s non-stop pressure was rewarded in the last 10 minutes when C. Chilton and K. Houghton netted to give it a 2-1 victory. Results were: ENGLISH CUP
