Fishing boats impounded

In separate incidents yes- ' terday, the United States Coast Guard seized a Russian [trawler near Alaska, and an ] Ecuadorian gunboat seized yet another American tuna boat off the coast of Ecuador. The tuna boat John F. Kennedy was seized about 1.00 I miles off the coast of Ecuador after a burst of machinegun fire across her bow. I Ecuador claims a 200-mile [territorial limit off her coast; 'he United States recognises only the international 12mile boundary. The John F. Kennedy was the eighteenth Americanowned tuna boat seized by Ecuador since January 11. It is estimated that the seizures have cost the owners neatly SUSIm in fines, for which they have been reimbursed by the United States Government. The Russian trawler, seized near Kodiak, was fishing within the United States 12mile limit. She is one of a fleet of 15 Russian vessels which have been in the Shumagin Island area for several weeks.
