Little interest at swimming carnival

Few competitors, probably because the national age-group championships are only a weak away, deprived the North Beach Swimming Club of a reasonable carnival on Satur* day afternoon.

Only three members of the Canterbury age-group team for the nationals were present at the carnival, and although they did not produce good performances, their times were relatively fast under the conditions. No girl members of the agegroup team were present at the carnival, and only three boys— D. Scott, E. Box and C. Wright—were present. It was the latter two who provided the best race of the day.

In the 100 metres backstroke event, Box and Wright swam side by side for almost the complete distance until Box took the lead with only about 10 metres remaining and managed to hold on to his lead for a convincing win. D. Scott covered the 100 metres freestyle in the good time of 57.35ec, and his clubmate. G. Knight, was only slightly behind him in the reasonable time of 58.5 sec.

Abbreviations used in the following results are: New Brighton (New B.), North Beach (N. 8. Papanui (P.), St Albans (St A.), Wool st on Park (W.P.). Results were:—
