TV production by the N.Z. Ballet
The New Zealand Ballet has staged a special production of the ballet "Facade” for television and the programme will be screened by the N.Z.B.C. later this year. The ballet first performed in .1931 was reproduced for the New Zealand Ballet by Bryan Ashbridge, assisted by Dorothea Zaymes. The principal dancers are Jon Trimmer and Elena Carter, a guest dancer from the Mexican National Ballet. John Charles produced the programme for the N.Z.B.C.
"Facade," a collection of satirical dances, is based on poems by Edith Sitwell. The original choregraphy was done by Frederick Ashton, with music by William Walton. Essentially light and gay in mood, the ballet contains an introductory fanfare and nine dances from different countries.
This is the first television performance of “Facade,” although it has featured in the repertoire of the New Zealand Ballet since 1960. It is now six years since “Facade” was danced in New Zealand.
