Extra room for high school

Two properties on land ad« jacent to Hagley High School have been bought recently by the Department of Education —and the school hopes to acquire both to provide more teaching space. The school’s headmaster (Mr I. D. Leggat), told the board of governors’ at its meeting on Friday evening that one house in Stewart Street would be used by small groups being taught music. Mr P. J. Halligan, the board’s secretary, said that efforts had been made for 20 years to buy the whole block round the school to give room for expansion. Houses had been “gobbled up” one by one, but could only be bought as they became available, because the department would not invoke the Public Works Act.
