Supreme Court BURGLARY CHARGE
Men found guilty Stanley Taylor Starkey, aged 30, unemployed, and James Patrick Martin, aged 28, a labourer, were found guilty by a jury in the Supreme Court yesterday on a joint charge of breakin p and entering the shop o’ Knight’s Butchery, Ltd, 17? High Street, with intent tr commit a crime on Octobe--14. Mr Justice Macarthur re manded both men in custod to February 12 for sentence They were represented by M M. J. Glue.
Mr N. W. Williamson ap peared for the Crown, whicl called five witnesses.
Outlining the case for th> Crown, Mr Williamson sai that a man and his wif were in a warehouse in Hig' Street on the evening of Or tober 14, when they hear glass breaking, and saw tw< men in the doorway o’ Knight’s butchery. Onman went into the she while the other stayed ou’ side. The police were tele phoned and the two accuser were found near the shop Both had had liquor. The' denied the offence. Evidence was given b' Colin Robert Milligan, r company director, and hi' wife, Valmai Isabella Milli gan, that while Mr Milligar telephoned the police hii wife stood at the window o' the warehouse, which was or the first floor, and watched the men. She gave a run ning commentary on theiactions which her husbanr 1 relayed to the police on the telephone. The two accused said ir evidence that they had beer drinking at the Excelsior Hotel and after it closed the'’ walked along High Stree’ looking for a restaurant tha’ was open. They said that they had nothing to do with the burglary of Knight’s but chery, and Mrs Milligan wav mistaken when she said that she had seen them in the doorway of the shop. Man guilty of sex offence After a retirement of two hours and a half a jury ir the Supreme Court yesterday found Ernest James Brown, aged 30, a driver guilty on a charge of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl aged 13 and not guilty on an alternative charge of rape. Mr Justice Macarthur remanded Brown in custody to February 12 for sentence. Mr G. R. Lascelles appeared for Brown, who pleaded not guilty to both charges. The Crown was represented by Mr N. W. Williamson.
