Veteran woman bowler unbeaten

A 79-year-old bowler, Mrs R. A. Vaughan (Woolston Working Men’s Club), was one of eight skips to complete the section play of the New Zealand women’s fours championship with an unblemished record, in Christchurch yesterday.

In addition to the unbeaten rinks, 28 teams lost only one of their six matches, and another 43 combinations won four games to boost the number of qualifiers to 79. The one-life play-offs begin this morning. Mrs Vaughan, one of the oldest and most experienced players in the tournament, has been an active competitor for “well over 30 years.” Ably assisted by Mesdames N. Thackwell, N. Robinson and E. Milne, she has gained several impressive winning

margins; but Mrs Vaughan admits to a “close shave” in her game against Mrs E. Piper (Richmond) on Tuesday afternoon, two shots on the final end providing an 18-16 victory. Among other skips td avoid defeat was the title-holder, Mrs K. Brodrick (Beerescourt).

Mrs M. Nicol (Marewa), three times winner of this event, accomplished her task of having to win twice yesterday to avoid elimination. Her club-mate and the present singles champion, Mrs E. Wilkie, completed a similar assignment. The 1970 pairs winners, Mesdames R. Chaafe and J. Ryan (skip), in company with Mesdames J. Mackenzie and T. E. Taylor (Onehunga) finished with five wins to keep alive their chances of another title.

The winning fours skips at the 1968 (Mrs S. Winstanley, Marewa) and 1969 (Mrs E. Silvester, Shirley) tournaments also qualified. Mrs Winstanley had her first loss yes terday, and Mrs Silvester won one of her matches to beat the cut-off.
