DELAY WITH NEW TUG

Late delivery of parts

The launching of the new tug, Canterbury, being built at Whangarei for the Lyttelton Harbour Board, cannot now be expected before the end of March, the board was told yesterday. The chief engineer (Mr J. B. Bushell) said that the stem tube bushing, tail shaft and propeller were not expected at the builder’s yard at Whangarei until March 10, although the order had been >laced in April, 1970, and delivery promised for JulyAugust If there were no further delays, the tug should have trials about the end of April. “This is hard on the board and the contractor points out that it is also hard on him, as he is held up for payments,” said Mr Bushell. “A lot of major firms face this delay on overseas orders and find it difficult to get recourse or contracts for firm delivery dates.” Warden.—Mr L. A. McMillan was appointed honorary launch warden and beach ranger for the harbour. Pilot— The board issued a pilot’s licence to Captain W. T. Oliver, who recently passed the necessary examination.
