Ashley gives to Games
The Ashley County Council has agreed to make financial contributions towards organ ising the 1974 Commonwealth Games, but only to the extent of about half what the games promotion committee sought during its initial appeal two years ago. Then the council deferred a decision, pending success in the games application. The Ashley contribution will be $l5O a year for five years, instead of $307 a year which would have been paid over if the recommended rate of contribution of 55c per head of population had been adopted by the council. “It looks pretty certain that the cost of the games will increase,” said Cr J. U. McCracken. “If we keep our contributions down a bit now we’re more likely to help them when they come back again later and ask for more—as they’re sure to do.”
