GERMANS TRAIN ON ARRIVAL
Six of the West German swimmers who arrived in Christchurch from Sydney yesterday had been training for the last five weeks in a covered pool at St Moritz, several thousand feet up in the Swiss Alps, a spokesman for the team said yesterday. They were coached by a former holder of the world record in the men’s individual medley, G. Hetz. One of the swimmers. W. Lampe, hopes to regain the European record for 1500 metres freestyle during the team’s tour of New Zealand and Australia.
In the European championships last September, Lampe was second in the 1500 metres, won by another West German, H. Fassnacht, who held world records in the 200 and 400 metres freestyle last year. Fassnacht who attends university in the United States, was unavailable for the tour. Fassnacht’s winning time at the championships established a new European record of 16min 19.9 sec, while Lampe’s time was 16min 25.65ec. The West German team arrived in Christchurch after 30 hours travelling from Frankfurt. Half an hour after arriving at its hotel, the team was training at the Centennial Pool.
