Tasman toll charges
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, Jan. 31. Telephone charges from Australia to New Zealand are to be cut tomorrow to $1 a minute, with a three-minute minimum. The previous rate was $1.25 a minute, with a minimum of $3.75. The Australian Postmaster-! General (Sir Alan Hulme) said today that the rate; would apply to “call-a-num-. ber” calls. Person-to-person! calls would be subject to a $1.50 surcharge. New Zealand will also change its Tasman telephone charges system, but not until the price freeze is lifted on February 15. A Post Office spokesman said tonight that the new rates—sl.2o a minute for station-to-station “call-a-number” calls and a $l.BO surcharge for person-to-person calls—were included in Post Office increases announced in November.
The existing system for New Zealand-to-Australia calls applies a flat charge of $1.25 a minute.
