( N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) WEST BERLIN, January 31. People in East and West Germany have been given a direct telephone service for) the first time in 19 years: it was choked with calls as soon : as it opened today. East Germany agreed last Monday that 10 lines be opened. It cut the entire system of 3910 lines on May 27, 1952, alleging that the United States Central Intelligence Agency and anti-Communist organisations had misused it In 1954 East Germany offered a semi-automatic system of 50 lines. This was rejected by the West Berlin City Government because it wanted the complete service restored.
Appeal fails.—The Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal by Era Hall against conviction and sentence before Mr Justice Wilson in the Christchurch Suprem'e Court on a charge of assault) with intent to injure.—(P.A.)'
