When the former Canterbury representative cricketer, C. G. Snook, made a century for Old Boys A in the president’s grade on Saturday, his partner in a valuable lastwicket stand was D. Benson, an Old Boys’ member of many years’ standing. The previous week, Benson, who has had firm charge of the number eleven batting position for about seven years, was thrown out, for 0, after the last wicket with Snook had added more than 20 runs. On Saturday, Benson came in at precisely 3 p.m. This time he scored 1 not out, in a lastwicket stand of 57. Benson won much satisfaction from staying in while Snook scored more than 50 rtans. But he was bitterly disappointed to see his partner succumb. For Benson, for some years, has had what is euphemistically called “an arrangement” with another former Canterbury player, P. A. Small—the “arrangement” being that Benson is rewarded if he survives half an hour. And Snook was dismissed when Benson’s batting time was 27} minutes.
