Seeks world record

At the age of 14, the Sydney girl swimmer, Shane Gould, has been described as the best ailround freestyle competitor in the world. Her feats in the New South Wales championships last month put her in the world’s top 10 for all freestyle events from 100 to 1500 metres.

She is ranked fifth for both 800 and 1500 metres, sixth for 400 metres, and seventh for 100 and 200 metres. Her coach, Forbes Carlile, regards her as having the ideal build for a woman swimmer—she is sft 7in tall and weighs Bst 121 b. She has obviously mapped out her career care-

fully. In a recent interview she said she would retire from competitive swimming in five years—after breaking Dawn Fraser’s world record of 58.9 sec for 100 metres. Miss Gould’s best time for the distance is 60.7 sec, but she is already faster than Miss Fraser over 200 metres.
