An open tournament at Amberley on Sunday, January 24, was won by a team from the .Christchurch club comprising B. S. Johns, W. J. Cole, S. E. Lawson and L. C. Lindley. Not surprisingly, this team, which advanced into the latter stages of the Dominion fours in Wellington last month, held too many guns for the other 15 fours which took part, although a local team skipped by R. W. Cormack put up a good fight before going down 16-11. « s» #
One two-lifer and five onelifers remain in Amberley’s singles championship. The two-lifer is K. McFarlane and the one-lifers J. Hayes, P. Croft, J. Stackhouse, C. James and J. Clark. A wonderful example of the rewards that can come to those who fight to the last was witnessed during the final round of last Saturday’s play in the open pairs
tournament. Two games being played on adjoining rinks took on a similar pattern and with about threequarters of an hour to go before the bell the scores were almost identical, the differences being about 10 points. One of the skips who was trailing suddenly decided that he had had enough and to the surprise of his opponents and apparently his lead he conceded, threw his bowls into his bag and was out of the gate before onlookers had had time to realise the game had terminated.
The other skip who was behind kept plugging away and suddenly he pulled in a five and this was all the encouragement he and his lead needed to storm home and snatch victory on the last ends.
It was a pity that the skip who had so prematurely thrown in the towel had not stayed and seen just how abruptly the complexion of the other match changed. It might have done more for his game than all the mumblings about his own form he was probably indulging in. 4s 4s #

In recent championship singles games at Christchurch, G. Barnes, only a second-year player, went down by one point to E. Bradshaw and D. Langley had a comfortable win over an out-of-form W. J. Cole.
K. Smith had a good win in the fours when he scored a three on the last end to beat E. Trenberth by one point and in another rinks game J. Tatam beat R. Sarney in a game which took a number of turns. Tatam went well clear on the first half of the board, but then Sarney’s team came right and the result hinged on the final end. Sarney had the last head in his favour, when Tatam played a forcing shot with his last bowl. It was off line, but clipped a wing bowl and deflected in to be shot.
