U.K. and Aust. firms form container line

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 2. British shipping lines and the Australian National Line are co-operating to form a new container service to be known as the Pace Line.

The line will be run in New Zealand by, the international container consortia, Associated Container Transportation (N.Z.) and Overseas Containers (N.Z.), Ltd, and will ply between New Zealand, Australia and the east coast of the United States. The New Zealand chairman of the Pace Line (Mr K. H. Churchouse) said today that the move was the first step toward a change from conventional to container cargo services.

“Pace” is the short title for “Pacific America Container Express.” A.C.T. and O.C.L. were now building four new container ships, and the first one was expected to make its maiden voyage to New Zealand in the middle of this year, he said. Three of the ships would be for A.C.T. and one for 0.C.L., and A.N.L. would provide another ship. Mr Churchouse said the British lines would phase out their conventional service as the five container ships progressively joined the fleet to provide a 14-day frequency service. »

In the interim, Pace would use both container and conventional ships.
