The Apollo 14 crew appeared fit for their moonlanding missions after a five-hour medical examination at the Manned Spacecraft Centre in Houston, Texas, yesterday. Dr Charles Berry, chief of medical operations, said that no medical problem had been encountered in either the prime or the back-up crew. Apollo 14 is due to be launched at 8.23 a.m. New Zealand time on Monday, February 1, with Captain Alan Shepard, aged 47, of the United States Navy, in command, Major Stuart Roosa, aged 37, of the United States Air Force as command module pilot, and Commander Edgar Mitchell, aged 40, of the United States Navy, as lunar module pilot.
The astronauts, who will undergo three more medical tests before the flight, will begin a 21-day premission period of semiisolation at Cape Kennedy on Monday, during which they will be allowed contact only with persons doctors have certified as free of disease.
