RUNAWAY STEER SHOT

This steer, an Angus-Hereford cross, was shot in Antigua Street yesterday morning after is escaped from an overturned cattle truck. The steer was one of eight carried in the truck, which overturned after a skid on the wet surface of lower Lincoln Road. Seven were herded back within 15 minutes, but the other led pursuers on a half-hour chase. Seven carloads of police, a traffic officer, two Addington saleyards trucks and another cattle truck joined the pursuit through Spreydon. An attempt to shoot the steer in Simeon Street failed, but it was later shot in Antigua Street. The truck sustained little damage and no-one was injured.
