N.Z. BOYS BEATEN
State team in final (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SYDNEY New South Wales won a race against the clock to beat New Zealand and enter the final of the Australian schoolboys’ cricket championship at Rushcutters Bay yesterday.
New South Wales scored 203 for seven after dismissing New Zealand for 200.
M. Fisher played a valuable knock for New South Wales and was unlucky to miss his century. He scored 94 in 159 minutes, including 10 boundaries, before being caught by the New Zealand captain, D. Newton.
When Fisher went, his side still needed 57 runs in 45 minutes to win. The lower-order batsmen, B. Piper, R. Phillips and M. Lang attacked the bowling and reached their target with seven minutes to spare.
The New Zealand tali-enders had added 126 runs for the last two wickets to give their team a fighting chance. B. McKechnie ; scored 63 in 75 minutes, includling two sixes over square-leg and five fours. He and S. Lewis added 66 in 48 minutes for the ninth wicket.
The New South Wales win puts the side into the final against Victoria. Scores: New Zealand 200 (B. McKechnie 63, S. Lewis 40 not out, P. Nixon 26, D. McDonald 20; A. Poole 4/54), New South Wales 203/7 (M. Fisher 94, B. Piper 26; P. Whitcombe 3/64, McKechnie 2/20).
