Waikouaiti Cup to Pseudonym
"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN. Pseudonym had his first success in open company in the §2400 Waikouaiti Cup when he came fast from near the rear for an easy win. His Riccarton trainer, D. .1. Thistoll, and the public thought that his stable-mate. Flower Girl, would win but the Jekyll mare was third after General Boy.
This event was the feature race and the first leg of the Waikouaiti Racing Club’s T.A.B. concession double yesterday. The second leg, the Toomey Memorial, was won by Hombre and the combination paid $21.45 for $l. Pseudonym and Libanson paid $18.90 on the concession. Pseudonym is by We Don’t Know, which also sired Daytime, winner of the previous race. He is raced by Messrs D. Carey and S. G. Duffield, of Christchurch, and was ridden by the Riccarton apprentice, D. Reed. Genera] Boy and Royal Mount made tjie early running in the Waikouaiti Cup. Just inside the mile Royal Mount took charge and at the half-mile he was joined by Harold Bank clear of General Boy, then Flower Girl and How Exciting ahead of El Shub and Pseudonym, with First Son tailed off. There was little change to the straight. Not much separated Harold Bank and General Boy near the furlong, but Psuedonym came fast to win by a length and a quarter going away. General Boy held second by a length and three-quarters,, : Flower Girl finishing on for third I I a neck ahead of Harold Bank.: There was a gap of three lengths ! I to. El Shub which showed little ■ fight at the finish. CLOSE CALL Hombre mastered top weight of Bst 101 b to lead all the way in the Toomey Memorial, but the Comte de Grasse gelding had to be kept up to his work to hold off a late bid by Libanson.
It was Hombre’s third win In his last four starts for his Christchurch owner, Mr D. W. Wild, and his Riccarton trainer, V. D. Clutterbuck. Amalgamation stumbled at the start and was tailed off. Hombre had a length and a half to spare from Screened and the favourite. Gee Tee, then Libanson, clear of Lady Fort, starting the run home. Libanson just failed to peg back the winner. Twolength margins separated Gee Tee and Lady Fort.
