R.D. Butt should drive second major winner
The young Greenpark trainer-driver, R. D. Butt, looks set to gain his second major success for the week when he drives Tony Bear, am ember of the team trained by his father, W. R. Butt, in the $7500 Canterbury Park Cup at Addington Raceway this evening.
R. D. Butt trained and drove Global Hall, surprise winner of the Rowe Memorial Cup at Alexandra Park on Thursday afternoon, and last evening he drove Tony Bear to beat ail but his stablemate, Johnny Gee, in the Stewards’ Trotting Free-for-all.
Tony Bear wil Istart from 18 yards this evening, and Johnny Gee will share the back mark of 36 yards with Tutira. The advantage of 18 yards in the handicaps could turn the scales in favour of Tony Bear. Merrin, a solid finisher for his placing at Ashburton last Saturday, is certain to run on more solidly than most towards the end and he might put the bracket to the test. Inferno, winner of the New Zealand Trotting Free-for-ali in November, Going, Cardigan Lass, Light View and Tutira are others capable of adding interest to the finish. The appearance of Stella Frost, winner of Thursday’s Auckland Cup, will highlight the second leg, the New Year Free-for-all. Unfortunately she has drawn the second line and this may influence her connections to scratch her. However, the second line has not stopped good horses winning in the past and if she lines up she should go close to winning. Upper Class, a former stablemate of Stella Frost, will form a strong bracket with Rauka Lad. Along with Leading Light, Intrepid and an out-of-form runner in True Averil, they appeal most of the others. The on-course concession double will be run on the Light Brigade Stakes and the Members’ Stakes, Forest King and General Demand forming a likely combination. Fine weather is forecast and the track will again be fast.
