Uneven trading on Australian markets

Mining and oil shares advanced in more active trading on Australian stock exchanges on Thursday, although there was an easing tendency near the close. Industrials were mixed.

Poseidon remained out of favour, easing a further 100 c to 4400 c, but International Mining sold up to 100 c before closing at 96c. Theseus jumped 15c to 105 c, and Spargos had its last sale at 110 c, a rise of 3c. Buyers were offering 115 c after this but there were no sellers. The heavy-weights were generally steady. Western Mining sold at 1010 c, Great Boulder at 325 c, and Hamersley at 580 c. M.1.M., however, gained 5c to 445 c, and Peko rose 10c to 1140 c.

Beach stood out among the oils with a 10c gain to 72c, while Woodside moved 3c higher to 47c. Genoa was an exception to the firming trend, shedding 6c at 18c. Investors appeared unimpressed with Comalco’s final divident announcement of 13 per cent. The shares lost 6c to 504 c. West Australian Wool was one of the bright spots on the industrial boards, gaining a further 7c to 75c. B.H.P. eased 5c to 1270 c, but Thiess gained 10c to 465 c. Hooker at 120 c, and Petersville at 22c, each shed Ic. Custom Credit at 167 c, and McDonald Industries at 105 c, each gained sc.
