Nine riders sat their B certificate examination at Yaldhurst recently in atrocious weather. In such conditions the examination probably should have been postponed. However, this is difficult with the examiners usually coming from some distance away. All the children were thoroughly tested by three examiners, Mrs A. McCully, Mrs G. Cresswell and Mr J. Lee. Five entrants were successful. They were Margaret Dempsey and Russell Topp (Kaiapoi), Jan McKenzie (Amberley), Ann Couper (Little River) and Jenny Shand (Ferrymead). SPONGE CAKE: Max Schmeling became the world heavy-weight boxing champion on June 12, 1930, when he beat Jack Sharkey by disqualification. He lost the title to Sharkey on June 21, 1932.
