Both Auckland and North Shore suffered first innings defeats when the first round of the second series in the Rothmans Hallyburton Johnstone women’s cricket contest concluded at Melville Park on New Year’s Eve. „ Auckland, replying to Wellington’s first innings score of 242/8 declared, finished the first day at 94/3, then slumped to be all out for 134—-just nine runs short of avoiding the follow-on. A fine century by the Auckland captain, R. McKenzie (113), and a fighting knock of 53 by E. Ryan, carried the Second innings score eventually to 241/8 declared. Wellington was 54/5 at stumps. x

North Shore featured a vigorous last-wicket stand between E. Allen and E. Badham to close its first innings only nine runs short of Canterbury’s 116. Yesterday, Auckland finished in a strong position against Canterbury at the end of the first day’s play in the third series. Dismissing Canterbury for 181, the chief feature of which was a fine 69 by D. Mcßae, J. Stenning and G. Page took the bowling honours. At stumps, Auckland had scored 95/2. Wellington routed Otago in the morning for 85, J. Saulbrey claiming 4/15 and C. Salmon 3/18. Wellington replied with 197/5 before declaring. P. McKelvey (80) and L. Henshilwood (49) steered Wellington into a good position to gain an outright win today.

SECOND ROUND Canterbury 116 and 21875 (E. Rouse 79, S. Cowels 60) beat North Shore 107 and 117/3 (M. King 50, J. Doull 28, V. McGregor 2/6), on the first Innings. Wellington 242/8 and 54/5 (J. Stevens 3/21), beat Auckland 134 and 241/8 dec (R. McKenzie 113, E. Ryan 53; J. Raven 4/63), on the first innings. THIRD ROUND Canterbury 181 (D. Mcßae 69, E. Rouse 24, S. Vaughan 24; J.
