Bus courtesy
Sir, —Correspondents on “bus courtesy” have attempted to be fair, but the remarks of “Caractacus” on union heads call for comment. I have been in unions since 16 and for 20 years have taken an active part in union administration. Never have. I come across an attitude by any union official of the boss “having to toe the line or the country look out.” My experience of other officials and my personal attitude has been one of trying to get the boss to see reason and meet just claims without forcing a situation where strike action is the only action left to the membership. Many times, to gain a satisfactory settlement, have I heard used, and used myself, the plea of how stoppages can upset the very structure and living of those who depend of the particular service that is in danger of coming to a halt, and pleaded for a just settlement to avoid such upset.—Yours, etc., NORMAN GRAY. December'3l, 1970.
