BELFAST QUIET

15 killed in 1970 CN.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BELFAST, Jan. 1. A year of .violence has ended quietly in Belfast. In the last 12 months 15 persons were killed; 50 civilians and 90 soldiers suffered severe injuries, and hundreds of minor casualties were reported. More than 150 bombs were exploded. The cost of riots and explosions to the Government of Northern Ireland has been in excess of £6m.

The garrisoning of Northern Ireland continues to place great strain on the resources of the British Army. Units are still being withdrawn for duty in Ulster from the N.A.T.O. garrison on the Rhine; gunners and tank crews have had to be trained and equipped for an infantry role.

During their tours in Ireland this year the soldiers seized 48,000 rounds of ammunition, 50001 b of explosives, 103 pistols, 81 rifles and 10 machine-guns. There has been no serious rioting since October, and the strength of the provincial garrison has been reduced to 6000, from a maximum of 12,000 in August
