Ore from ocean bed

This is a drawing of an ocean dredge invented by engineers in Duisburg, West Germany. It has a suction jib which is designed to pluck the manganese lumps from the ocean floor in a maximum depth of 5000 metres. It is run automatically as is the intermediate station of the

deep sea mining installation 500 metres below the surface. It sucks the manganese lumps up, reduces them to small pieces in its crusher and then sends them up to the surface. The ingenious installation, which will mine ores from the oceans still exists on the drawing board only. The planned support of ocean technology by the German Fed-

eral Ministry for Education and Science could accelerate its realisation. At a meeting of the “Ocean Technology Dialogue Group” in Kiel held in December, 1970, a high ministry official said that the German raw material research, ship Valdivia would examine the deposits of ore placers, ore mud and manganese lumps in the near future.
