SUMNER PHOTOGRAPH

Among many correspondents discussing the photograph of an official occasion at Sumner (No. IB) Mrs Winyard (nee Monck, of Monck’s Bay) identified the central figure as that of Mr W. Carr Rowlett, Mayor of Sumner. Mr Walter de Thier of Sumner identifies Mr (later Sir) Henry Wigram as the gentleman on the mayor’s right., Although Mr Rowlett was mayor in 1898 and again in 1900-04, Mr Wigram was Mayor of Christchurch in 1902 and 1903 so it seems likely that the photograph was taken in the latter years. The particular occasion, however, is not yet known. The photographs for this series have been lent by the Alexander Turnbull Library. Readers who are following

these articles should cut the reproductions out of “The Press” as they appear, and keep them for future reference.—W.J.A.B. The Mullogh The photograph of the little steamer Mullogh, printed last Saturday, was taken at Timaru, not Lyttelton. I had some doubts, and Mr Jefferson of Otipua Road, Timaru, settles the matter by identifying the Gentlemen’s Club on the left of the slip and D. C. Turnbull’s woolstore (still standing) on the right. The dredge Tanawhai, he adds, used to be cleaned on this site, near which as a boy he used to obtain crabs.—W.J.A.B.
