‘Shark’ was bark

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 30. A shark scare kept swimmers out of the water at Wellington's Oriental Bay today for about half an hour. But the “shark” was found to be a 9ft piece of bark from a wharf piling. The bark jutting out of the water was mistaken for a shade's fin. It was seen at about 10.55 a.m. and was “caught” shortly after noon A wharf police spokesman said a school of porpoises in the harbour had caused "a couple of scenes.” But, he said, where there were porpoises there was no possibility of finding sharks.
