Avenue lights altered
In order to increase the capacity of the Moorhouse Avenue-Colombo Street intersection, alterations have been made to the phasing of the traffic lights.
Previously all traffic using the intersection had its own exclusive light phase: in other words, a “protected” movement.
But the intersection is now running close to capacity for much of the day, with vehicles using it at the rate of 4400 an hour. The change in light phasing means that traffic moving through the intersection on Moorhouse Avenue from the east and west now moves together, as it would if it were an ordinary intersection without an overbridge on Moorhouse Avenue. Turning right Because of this, traffic turning right from Moorhouse Avenue into Colombo Street must give way to other traffic moving across Colombo Street on Moorhouse Avenue, or turning left into Colombo Street from Moorhouse Avenue.
Signs to remind motorists turning right that they must give way have been fixed next to the lanterns on the light standards. To improve visibility at the intersection, it is proposed to ban some of the parking under the overbridge, immediately beside the intersection. Meanwhile, the linked traffic lights on another main city road—-Bealey Avenue—
have now been in action almost a week, at the Colombo Street, Sherboume Street and Manchester Street intersections. The city council's traffic engineers are still adjusting the light settings to give the smoothest possible flow of traffic on all the roads involved.
