s2m more from Govt The Australian Federal Government has increased its grants for the performing arts in 1970-71 by $1,000,000 to $3,850,000. It has also granted an extra $1,000,000 to the Australian Film Development Corporation. lite Prime Minister (John Gorton) announced the grants in Canberra and later, in Sydney, they were explained in more detail by the chairman of the Australian Council for the Arts, Dr Coombs. Each year the Council for the Arts wgs moving into new areas and this year another fund had been added —for youth and education programmes' $BO,OOO. The Council was convinced that one of its most important roles would be encourgement of programmes which developed talent and stimulated interest in the arts for young people, both inside and outside the education system.
